Prevent Frozen Pipes

During the winter, freezing pipes can cause expensive repairs. We do not want this to happen to you. Here are some ideas to help:

Preventing Pipes from Freezing
  1. Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturers or installer directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  2. Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  3. Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  4. Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a pipe sleeve or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing (like St George).
Things to do and Look for Before you Have a Problem
  1. Know where your water shutoff is so if you have a broken pipe you can quickly turn off the water.
  2. Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
  3. Pipes can be relocated by a professional if the home is remodeled.
  4. Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we want you to be safe during the holidays. Thanksgiving Day is a great time to get together with friends and family and reflect on what you’re thankful for. The Thanksgiving holiday has more than double the number of home cooking fires than an average day. In fact, more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day each year, so it is important to keep safety in mind in the kitchen on this holiday. Here are some ideas to help keep you and your family safe during the holidays:
  • Test your smoke detectors before you start cooking.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking dinner. Sometimes when you step away you might get distracted for longer than anticipated.
  • Keep items that may catch fire away from hot surfaces.
  • Turkeys can take a while to cook. It is important to stay home while the turkey is cooking.
  • Keep an eye on kids and pets so they don't touch a hot surface or pull something from the stove on top of them.
  • Keep your pot handles turned inward so the young ones don't try to reach and grab the hot pots and to avoid accidents.
  • Keep sharp objects like knives out of reach of children.
  • After you are done cooking, make sure you have turned off all burners and ovens.
  • If you have candles for decoration make sure you put them out when you are done. Walk through your house and blow them out.
At Main Street Insurance ,your safety is important to us and we want you to have a great Thanksgiving, especially a safe one. A trip to the emergency room tends to ruin the holiday. Hopefully these tips can help you have an accident-free Thanksgiving.

How to Prepare your Car for Colder Weather

Colder weather is on its way this week in St George, Utah. Here are some items that you or a mechanic can check before the freezing weather gets here.

  • Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing.
  • Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean.
  • Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels.
  • Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly.
  • Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability.
  • Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well.
  • Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level.
  • Emergency kit - make sure you have one in your car in case you get stuck in the cold.
