Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we want you to be safe during the holidays. Thanksgiving Day is a great time to get together with friends and family and reflect on what you’re thankful for. The Thanksgiving holiday has more than double the number of home cooking fires than an average day. In fact, more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day each year, so it is important to keep safety in mind in the kitchen on this holiday. Here are some ideas to help keep you and your family safe during the holidays:
  • Test your smoke detectors before you start cooking.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking dinner. Sometimes when you step away you might get distracted for longer than anticipated.
  • Keep items that may catch fire away from hot surfaces.
  • Turkeys can take a while to cook. It is important to stay home while the turkey is cooking.
  • Keep an eye on kids and pets so they don't touch a hot surface or pull something from the stove on top of them.
  • Keep your pot handles turned inward so the young ones don't try to reach and grab the hot pots and to avoid accidents.
  • Keep sharp objects like knives out of reach of children.
  • After you are done cooking, make sure you have turned off all burners and ovens.
  • If you have candles for decoration make sure you put them out when you are done. Walk through your house and blow them out.
At Main Street Insurance ,your safety is important to us and we want you to have a great Thanksgiving, especially a safe one. A trip to the emergency room tends to ruin the holiday. Hopefully these tips can help you have an accident-free Thanksgiving.

Veteran's Day

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday which honors people who have served in armed service, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.

We at Main Street Insurance thank all of those Veterans who have served in the armed services and to those who are serving. Thank you for all you have done to make and keep this country great.

To celebrate this there is a Veteran's Day parade in St George, Utah that starts at 9:00am. The parade will start at about 200 W and Tabernacle and head east on Tabernacle.

How to Prepare your Car for Colder Weather

Colder weather is on its way this week in St George, Utah. Here are some items that you or a mechanic can check before the freezing weather gets here.

  • Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing.
  • Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean.
  • Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels.
  • Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly.
  • Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability.
  • Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well.
  • Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level.
  • Emergency kit - make sure you have one in your car in case you get stuck in the cold.
